Katrina transplant builds life anew

Gloria Cohen was never involved in the Holocaust, but these days the Hurricane Katrina transplant lives by the words of those who were.
"In the ending of a book by a doctor at Auschwitz, it didn't ask, 'Where was God?' " explained Cohen, 72 and now living in Rogers Park. "It said, 'God was good to me in my life.'

Rapist cought in Rogers Park

A Chicago man arrested and charged with a rape following a four-hour manhunt last week in Rogers Park was denied bail in court on Friday, May 12. Benjamin Johnson, 40, of the 5000 block of North Lincoln Avenue, was denied bail by Judge Maura Slattery-Boyle, and is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on May 24, according to Tandra Simonton, spokeswoman for the Cook County State's Attorney's Office. Zoning approved

The 49th Ward Zoning and Land Use Advisory Committee approved a zoning change that will allow more minimum lot area for a proposed condo development on the 1600 block of West Fargo Avenue. The zoning change is expected to go before the city of Chicago's Zoning Committee later this month.
The existing 6,201 square-foot lot currently contains a six-flat, which fronts on Fargo Avenue, and a four-car garage, which opens on to Rogers Avenue. The proposed three-unit building would replace the garage, and six parking spaces would be created in between the Fargo building and the proposed Rogers building. More......


Police seek leads in Rogers Park shooting

A 17-year-old was critically wounded in a Rogers Park shooting last week, police said. The victim, Julio Hernandez, was approached last Thursday shortly after midnight by a white van in the 6900 block of Paulina, police said. Someone in the van fired two or three shots at Hernandez, a suspected gang member. He was hit once in the back and transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. More.....
