New Law Calls For Affordable Veteran Health Care
AP-Blagojevich signed the bill on Memorial Day eve at the Vietnam Veteran's Memorial Plaza along the Chicago River.To be eligible for Veterans Care, vets must be between 19 and 64 years old, have been uninsured for the past six months, be ineligible for other federal and state health-care programs and be willing to pay a $40 monthly premium and co-pays. Storm brewing on ComEd rates
Crain's- The price of electricity in Chicago appears poised to jump more than 30% next year and could get much higher thanks to a power auction set to take place at the height of hurricane season.The auction, scheduled for Sept. 5, will introduce market-based pricing after a nine-year freeze on rates charged by Commonwealth Edison Co. Last week ComEd asked state regulators for approval of a plan to phase in the expected rate hike over three years.
That hike is now looking much steeper than previously expected. Based on futures prices for power in Northern Illinois next year, ComEd's rates for 2007 would increase 33% if the auction were held now. If the fall hurricane season is as bad as last year's, the increase could be as high as 50%, based on the spike in power prices after Hurricane Katrina. More....

Tribune -Foreclosures on home mortgages are on the way up.In Illinois during the first three months of 2006 nearly 13,700 properties entered foreclosure, up 32 percent from the fourth quarter of 2005, according to an analysis by property tracker RealtyTrac Inc. More....

Crain's-The American Hospital Association called for more federal funding to help hospitals get ready for the possibility of a flu pandemic, saying expenditures so far have not been specifically targeted toward hospital preparedness. More....

Somewhat Frank-I am pleased to announce the creation of TECH cocktail (as mentioned by Mike Arrington), a series of mixer events opened to bloggers, technology enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and companies interested in the technology arena in Chicago.
