Bring it on, bulldozer
Nature lover refuses to stand by as developers plan to bulldoze part of her property
Daily Southtown-Judy Gleitsman stood in the path of a bulldozer Monday to protect two trees planted near the edge of her Olympia Fields back yard.
When the rumbling machine drew closer and police arrived, Gleitsman sat down and began screaming, "Take me to jail. You're not cutting down these trees."
The one-woman sit-in worked, at least temporarily.

Parents Plan To Rally For Healthier Schools

Medill News Service- Salad bars in school cafeterias and increased physical education requirements are just two demands articulated by more than 500 parents who plan to rally for healthier schools Thursday afternoon in Humboldt Park.Parents and community groups organized the rally to encourage the Chicago Public Schools to adopt stronger measures against childhood obesity as part of a new school wellness policy. The district must finalize the wellness policy this summer to comply with new federal and state mandates, which require all schools to set health goals before next school year. Working under the auspices of a nonprofit organization called the Healthy Schools Campaign, parents are asking the Chicago Board of Education to adopt an ambitious plan.

14 alleged gang members face deportation
Tribune -Authorities have arrested 14 Mexican nationals who will be deported after an interagency investigation discovered they were illegal immigrants and members of a suburban street gang, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement official said.

Tower Beefs Up as Start Nears

CHICAGO-A long-awaited multifamily rental building planned for the corner of Des Plaines and Kinzie streets will be slimmer, taller and have 35 more units than originally expected. Revised plans by Fifield Cos., calling for a 350-unit, 39-story building at the southeast corner, were endorsed Friday by the plan commission.
Rents in the multifamily tower, across Kinzie Street from the Blommer Chocolate factory and part of the Kinzie Station development, are expected to exceed $2 per sf. However, 42nd Ward Alderman Burton Natarus predicts the building eventually will become condominiums. “Eight or nine years from now, it’ll be condo,” he says.
