Bush Hails "Turning Point"
Immigration reform pushed

Cops: Vanity plates led to arrest
Sun Times-It was a vanity license plate that caught the eye of a witness and led police to a Northwest Side man believed to be the hit-and-run driver who killed a 4-year-old girl in Lincoln Park over the weekend, authorities said on Monday.
Michael Roth, 57, of the 7000 block of North Kedzie, was charged Monday with a single count of leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and investigators say the distinctive "OCEAN21" Illinois license plates on his black 1999 Lexus were pivotal in finding him and the car at his apartment just an hour after Saturday's fatal crash.

Fire Damages Downtown Eatery, Apartments Above
Daily Northwestern-Firetrucks respond to an alarm at Cozy Noodles & Rice, 1018 DavisA kitchen fire at Cozy Noodle & Rice, 1018 Davis St., damaged the restaurant, the apartments above it and the adjacent store, Evanston Fire Department officials said Monday.The fire started in the kitchen of the downtown Evanston restaurant at about 4 p.m. Five engines and two trucks responded to the call, and the Skokie Fire Department was also called. Loretto Getting Help From TIF
Globe St.-A West Side hospital is in line to be the major beneficiary of a new tax increment financing district. The Harrison/Central redevelopment area is expected to generate $41 million in tax increment financing revenue, the majority of it expected to go to Loretto Hospital for renovation and expansion.

Chicago jobs said based on 'blessed list'
(UPI) -- Testimony about alleged rigged hiring moved close to the Chicago mayor's office Monday when an ex-sewer official said he hired employees from a "blessed list."
Joe Gagliano, who retired in 2002 as a deputy commissioner for the Department of Sewers, said he agreed to hire and promote workers based on their political allegiance to protect his own job, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Gagliano said at least two people recommended for promotions by mayor's office political operative Robert Sorich were unqualified for positions they were given.

Governor signs budget, prepares to roll out education plan
The Southern Illinoisan —Even as the ink was drying on the new state budget, Gov. Rod Blagojevich was making plans Monday to unveil a way to pump more money into the state’s public schools.
Plans for the announcement, set for Tuesday in Chicago, have been taking shape since Blagojevich pow-wowed with state Sen. James Meeks last week. Meeks had been threatening to run a third-party campaign for governor to showcase his belief that more money is needed for schools.

School district now can issue punishments based on what's on Web
Daily Herald - Blogs that depict Libertyville or Vernon Hills high school students involved in illegal or inappropriate behavior could officially lead to disciplinary action under a much-publicized policy adopted Monday night.
The Libertyville-Vernon Hills Area High School District 128 board unanimously approved the policy by updating the codes of conduct for students in athletic, fine arts and extracurricular programs. The rules are effective starting in the 2006-07 term.
