BREAKING NEWS: NU admits hazing in two more programs
Press release acknowledges hazing involving the men's swimming and mascot programs

Northwestern Athletic Director Mark Murphy announced two more incidences of hazing among the school's athletic programs Wednesday in addition to the women's soccer team's alleged hazing incident last August.

Separate investigations by Student Affairs during the current academic year revealed the men's swimming team and the mascot program had hazed its new members, according to an athletic department press release. More.....

Former NU women's soccer players respond to allegations

In an e-mail addressed to several local and national media outlets, former members of theNorthwestern women's soccer team responded to an alleged hazing incident involving players currently in the program.Sent from the e-mail account of Erin Ekeberg '01 and co-signed by 34 other former players, the letter denies any annual ritual of hazing in the program and conveys severe disappointment in the recent events that have come forward. Concern brews over Pilsen housing development

Alderman pledges opposition to proposed museum relocation

Ald. Burton F. Natarus (42nd) said the Chicago Children's Museum was an unwelcome addition to north Grant Park and should go where it's wanted.
Groups like the Grant Park Advisory Council and the Chicago Parks District had said area residents supported the museum's plans, but the showing Wednesday indicated otherwise, Natarus said. More......

County approves juvenile jail agreement

Commissioner Forrest Claypool — who made conditions at the facility a major part of his unsuccessful bid for the county board presidency — blasted the new agreement as a "rehash of the old settlement."
"The judge in this case, it was pretty clear, had no desire to get his hands dirty," said Claypool (D-Chicago), who voted no, along with Commissioner Mike Quigley (D-Chicago) and, in a rare dissension from the administration, Commissioner Joan Murphy (D-Crestwood).

Pay dispute led to stabbing, cops say

The day after allegedly stabbing his boss to death, a Harwood Heights man was ordered held on $2 million bond.
Tom Tuduj, 33, of the 4700 block of North Narragansett Avenue, has been charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a weapon and attempting to disarm a peace officer.
The killing occurred Tuesday morning at Poter Construction and Development Company, located on the 5400 block of North Cumberland Avenue on the city's Northwest Side.

Commissioner might split from anti-tax bloc

For the last three years, a slim majority of nine Cook County commissioners has prevented anything but cigarette taxes from increasing in county government.
That could change this year, as one of the nine has signaled a willingness to consider a tax increase.
Gregg Goslin, a Glenview Republican whose district covers parts of Arlington Heights, Hoffman Estates, Inverness and the Barrington area said Tuesday he doesn’t know where else the necessary funds could come from.

State hiring at center of new controversy

On the heels of the former governor’s federal corruption conviction and the start of a similar trial examining Chicago’s hiring practices, Gov. Rod Blagojevich’s administration suddenly finds itself defending how it doles out state jobs.
On Wednesday the governor’s office acknowledged keeping track of people recommended for state jobs by those with political connections, but said the process was legal and denied any attempt to influence who ended up on the payroll.
“Our expectation is that they would be treated like any other resume,” said spokeswoman Abby Ottenhoff.

Opponents of illegal immigration Wednesday urged the Kane County Board and Batavia city officials to withhold government contracts from companies that employ undocumented workers.
The first such effort in the suburbs, organizers said they hope what begins in the Fox Valley soon spreads elsewhere.
Home to both some of the largest immigrant communities outside Chicago and a growing immigration enforcement movement, Kane County falls on the frontlines of the immigration debate.
