Law Would Hold Parents Responsible For Fights

A City Council committee on Friday passed a proposed ordinance that would force parents to pay up if their child got into a fight at school.As CBS 2’s Mai Martinez reports, the measure is aimed at cracking down on gang violence. It would create a new city offense for fighting either at school or near school grounds.
Aldermen who support the ordinance say kids would also be punished, but they argue it is time parents were held responsible.“Maybe it will teach them a lesson,” said parent Elizabeth Ruiz. “Maybe they’ll learn. Maybe they’ll stop. Maybe the parents will get more on their child.” More....

With a few clicks on his laptop, Naperville Detective Rich Wistocki is staring at a St. Charles man who appears to be smoking marijuana.He clicks again, and there's another picture of the 22-year-old, nearly hidden under a large pile of what looks to be bags of marijuana leaves.
"Look at this. How stupid is this?" Wistocki says as he prints out the photo and saves a "screen grab" to his computer. "These guys put this out there, thinking that nobody's watching. That it's only their friends, but they are wrong.
"Wistocki, who works in his department's Internet crimes unit, has seen hundreds of photographs like these: Guys pointing guns, spraying graffiti, flashing gang signs or handfuls of money. Law enforcement officials say it's all part of the growing trend of gangs pushing thug life on the Internet. More.....

Man charged in connection with woman's plunge

The last man seen with a California woman who plunged from the seventh floor of a CHA high-rise early last week was charged Friday with attacking and restraining her.Marvin Powell, 23, a reputed gang member and a parolee, faces charges of aggravated criminal sexual assault, attempted criminal sexual assault and unlawful restraint, said John Gorman, a spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office. Powell, who had turned himself in for questioning Wednesday, was expected in Bond Court Saturday.
