Police Close Drug Markets in the 24 District and Public Housing
CPD-Chicago Police o Friday announced charges in two undercover investigations that dismantled drug operations in Chicago's Edgewater Community and the
Henry Horner/ West Haven Housing Development.
In Operation 24K, focusing on an area surrounded by Thorndale to Devon and Broadway to Sheridan, 14 individuals, including several high ranking members of the Gangster Disciples, were identified and warrants were issued for their involevment in the criminal drug conspiracy. ACLU Set To Sue AT&T Over Phone Records
Chicagoist - We’re sure by now that everyone has heard at least something about
the whole National Secuity Agency/AT&T, phone records debacle (this is where you look it up if you haven't). Well, it’s about to hit a lot closer to home. Meaning that if the possibility of a near-omniscient (as far as records go) entity like AT&T handing over regular, domestic phone records to the NSA bothers you at all, the American Civil Liberties Union is looking to argue a class action lawsuit against AT&T on behalf of Illinois customers.
It doesn’t stop there. Prominent people in the Chicago community have signed on as plaintiffs; namely exceptionally seasoned journalist, author and all sorts of other rockin' of the normer,
Studs Terkel, who charged the government with going “too far” with its data-mining effort. More...

CTA's subway idols
RedStreak- In honor of the "American Idol" finale that airs Wednesday, "Going Public" thought it would be fun to go deep into the bowels of the CTA and judge performers at subway stops. After all, "Idol" host Simon Cowell makes it look effortless to harp on pitchiness and inappropriate song choices while finding new applications for the term "dreadful." CTA performers are comparatively luckier than finalists Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee, who have been subjected to rigorous auditions, national humiliation and mugging for the camera to capture America's votes. To get your 15 minutes of fame on the CTA, you simply pay the transit agency $10 and show identification for a yearly permit to perform. More....

School Expansion Includes Theater
Globe St.-The redevelopment of De La Salle Institute, a Roman Catholic high school in the Bronzeville community that has an alumni list that includes many of the city’s movers and shakers, will preserve most of the once endangered Pickford Theater. The school’s $25-million plan for a new 100,000-sf building with 7,000 sf of retail space was endorsed by the plan commission.
The 117-year-old school has an enrollment of 900 boys at its 6.8-acre campus at the northwest corner of Michigan Avenue and 35th Street. De La Salle Institute plans to buy a building across Michigan Avenue from the city as part of its expansion. More...
