UIC seeds urban-based ecology degree program
Sun Times-It's often assumed that the place to study ecology is out in the country, where nature is supposedly unspoiled. But a new Ph.D. program recognizes it's only natural to use metropolitan Chicago as a field of study. More....

Study: Charity Hospitals Get More In Tax Breaks Than They Give In Care
AP -- A new study shows that not-for-profit hospitals in the Chicago area get three times more in tax breaks than they give in free health care. The analysis by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability estimates that 21 Cook County hospital networks get $326 million in tax breaks. But the analysis found those networks give only $105 million in free or discounted charity care to the poor and uninsured. More.... .

New laws weighed for dog owners
Tribune -A proposal to ban pit bulls in Chicago has spawned an alternative approach, backed by local canine experts, that would punish owners whose mistreatment creates violent dogs.A package of ordinances introduced by Ald. Eugene Schulter (47th) calls for action ranging from mandatory microchip implants in all dogs in the city to forfeiture of animals that repeatedly are allowed to run free by their owners.

Sun Times-If Gov. Rod Blagojevich and actor Vince Vaughn have their way, Chicago soon will become the new "Hollywood of the Midwest." The governor signed a bill Monday that gives film and television production companies tax credits if they film in Illinois.
