Daley Wants Universal Free Broadband Access
cbs2chicago.com -Mayor Richard M. Daley on Tuesday announced a plan to provide affordable broadband Internet access to all Chicagoans and to make computers more widely available to low-income residents.The city is issuing a request for proposals for private-sector partners to provide Internet access throughout the city, including free wireless service in schools, parks and major public gathering places, according to a release from the Mayor's office.Daley also offered $250,000 in grants to help community groups come up with innovative ways to help close the digital divide, and appointed an advisory panel to make further recommendations on the matter, the release said. Crain's- The price of electricity in Chicago appears poised to jump more than 30% next year and could get much higher thanks to a power auction set to take place at the height of hurricane season.The auction, scheduled for Sept. 5, will introduce market-based pricing after a nine-year freeze on rates charged by Commonwealth Edison Co. Last week ComEd asked state regulators for approval of a plan to phase in the expected rate hike over three years.
That hike is now looking much steeper than previously expected. Based on futures prices for power in Northern Illinois next year, ComEd's rates for 2007 would increase 33% if the auction were held now. If the fall hurricane season is as bad as last year's, the increase could be as high as 50%, based on the spike in power prices after Hurricane Katrina. More....

3 charged in meth busts
Tribune -Three men were charged with felonies Saturday after they were arrested Friday in drug busts involving more than 300 grams of methamphetamine at a North Side apartment and at the Palmer House Hilton in the Loop, Chicago police said.
About 6:30 p.m. Friday, officers entered an apartment on the 4200 block of North Broadway, where they arrested Dickenson and Krauss and seized about 260 grams of meth, authorities said. More....

Daily Southtown-Judy Gleitsman stood in the path of a bulldozer Monday to protect two trees planted near the edge of her Olympia Fields back yard.

CHICAGO-A long-awaited multifamily rental building planned for the corner of Des Plaines and Kinzie streets will be slimmer, taller and have 35 more units than originally expected. Revised plans by Fifield Cos., calling for a 350-unit, 39-story building at the southeast corner, were endorsed Friday by the plan commission.

Who took land from churches?

Whoever bought it, bought themselves trouble.
The board of directors of the First Presbyterian Church of Chicago authorized the sale last year of several vacant lots that the church had owned for nearly 10 years.
With land values in the Woodlawn neighborhood skyrocketing, the South Side church's four parcels were sold quickly--and two were resold--with more than $1.1 million changing hands in the transactions.
But there is one problem: The pastor at First Presbyterian says the church doesn't have a board of directors.
And the church never approved the sale of any of the four lots.
A Tribune investigation has found that in the last year, a dozen South and West Side churches, some of them just scraping by, have had land sold out from under them in the same way. More....

In a move to crack down on school violence, Chicago aldermen have advanced a measure that calls for stiff fines and possibly jail time for anyone involved in violence at or near a city school.
Ald. Michael Zalewski (23rd Ward) said Saturday that he supports the effort as a way to "strengthen a safety zone around schools where we see a spike in violence. We want to make it safer for students, faculty and residents of the community.

State Sen. James Meeks said Friday that's why he agreed to drop his bid to run as a third-party candidate for governor.
The governor's plan, the details of which were hammered out with Meeks during a five-hour negotiation, is to be publicly unveiled at a news conference Tuesday.
According to Meeks, the governor's plan will not include any new tax increases.

The pain of giving up an unwanted newborn child -- and resulting danger to the child's life -- has been addressed by Chicago health officials in a way unique to every other city in the nation.
Signs have been installed throughout the city pointing the way to safe havens for abandoned newborns, officials announced Thursday.
Chicago Department of Public Health officials, aldermen and childcare advocates gathered at a South Side police station for the unveiling of one of the signs, meant to inform desperate parents that they can leave their child at a safe haven without legal repercussions.
